Tao Te Ching · Ch. 50

Chū shēng rù sǐ. Shēng zhī tú, shí yǒu sān; Sǐ zhī tú, shí yǒu sān; Rén zhī shēng, dòng zhī yú sǐ dì, yì shí yǒu sān. Fú hé gù? Yǐ qí shēng shēng zhī hòu. Gài wén shàn shè shēng zhě, lù xíng bù yù sì hǔ, rù jūn bù bèi jiǎ bīng; Sì wú suǒ tóu qí jiǎo, hǔ wú suǒ yòng qí zhǎo, bīng wú suǒ róng qí rèn. Fú hé gù? Yǐ qí wú sǐ dì.

Going out is life; coming in is death. Three in ten are followers of life; three in ten are followers of death; and three in ten who value life are also moving toward death. Why? Because they cling too intensely to living. I have heard that one who truly knows how to sustain life walks the land without encountering rhinoceros or tiger, enters battle without being struck by weapons — the rhinoceros finds no place to thrust its horn, the tiger finds no place to use its claws, the soldier finds no place to drive the blade. Why? Because such a person has no place for death to enter.
