Tao Te Ching · Ch. 44
名與身孰親?身與貨孰多?得與亡孰病?是故甚愛必大費;多藏必厚亡。知足者不辱,知止者不殆,可以長久。
Míng yǔ shēn shú qīn? Shēn yǔ huò shú duō? Dé yǔ wáng shú bìng? Shì gù shèn ài bì dà fèi; Duō cáng bì hòu wáng. Zhī zú zhě bù rǔ, zhī zhǐ zhě bù dài, kě yǐ cháng jiǔ.
Which is more precious — your name or your body? Which matters more — your body or your possessions? Which is more harmful — gaining or losing? Thus, extreme attachment always comes at great cost; excessive accumulation always ends in heavy loss. One who knows contentment will not be disgraced. One who knows when to stop will not be endangered. Such a person can endure long.
