Tao Te Ching · Ch. 22
Qū zé quán, wǎng zé zhí, wā zé yíng, bì zé xīn, shǎo zé dé, duō zé huò. Shì yǐ shèng rén bào yī wéi tiān xià shì. Bù zì jiàn, gù míng; Bù zì shì, gù zhāng; Bù zì fá, gù yǒu gōng; Bù zì jīn, gù cháng. Fú wéi bù zhēng, gù tiān xià mò néng yǔ zhī zhēng. Gǔ zhī suǒ wèi qū zé quán zhě, qǐ xū yán zāi? Chéng quán ér guī zhī.
Yield and overcome; bend and be straight; empty and be full; wear out and be renewed; have little and gain; have much and be confused. Therefore the sage holds to the One and becomes the pattern for the world. Not displaying himself, he shines. Not justifying himself, he is distinguished. Not boasting, he achieves. Not glorying in his achievements, he endures. Because he does not contend, no one in the world can contend with him. The ancient saying 'yield and overcome' is not empty words — truly complete, one returns to it.
