Japji Sahib · Pauri 40

Pavan guroo paanee pitaa maataa dharat mahat. Divas raat du-ay daa-ee daa-i-aa khaylai sagal jagat. Chang-aa-ee-aa buri-aa-ee-aa vaachai dharam hadoor. Karmee aapo aapnee kay nayrhai kay door. Jinee naam dhi-aa-i-aa ga-ay maskat ghaal. Nanak tay mukh ujlay kaytee chhutee naal.

Air is the Guru, water the father, the great earth our mother. Day and night are the two nurses — female and male — in whose lap the whole world plays. Good deeds and bad deeds are read in the presence of Dharma. By their own deeds, some draw near, some are kept far. Those who meditated on the Name — they completed their hard labor. Nanak says — their faces are radiant, and many others are liberated alongside them.
