Yathā daṇḍena gopālo, gāvo pājeti gocaraṃ;Evaṃ jarā ca maccu ca, āyuṃ pājenti pāṇinaṃ.

Yatha dandena gopalo, gavo pajeti gocaram; Evam jara ca maccu ca, ayum pajenti paninam.

As with a staff a cowherd drives cattle to pasture, so old age and death drive the life of beings.
